Background
The IROC-Z Camaro ends in a bang. This is the first year the 1LE high performance option became widely known and available to the general public. Prior to 1990 the 1LE option was limited to licensed race drivers/teams only. This special package was known in Chevrolet Engineering as 1LE, but it was not an offered as an official ordered RPO feature. The 1LE Special Performance Components Package was triggered when the G92 Performance Axle option was ordered, G80 Limited-slip 3.23 rear and the C60 air conditioning option was not ordered. Air conditioning could not be ordered in these cars. The 1LE IROC-Z’s were classified as race series vehicles.
This 1990 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z is one of only 28 “1LE” Z28 coupes built for SCCA Showroom Stock racing series competition with the 5.7L/350ci engine. It is build number 21 of 28 ordered with the L98/B2L 350ci. tuned port injection engine and automatic transmission. Because it was ordered without air conditioning, the package also included an engine oil cooler, dual converter performance exhaust, 4-wheel heavy duty disc brakes with front units adapted from the Corvette, aluminum driveshaft and spare wheel, special shocks, special fuel pickup. fuel tank baffle to prevent surge during high-speed cornering, unique durometer jounce bumpers, plus much more. The 1LE option added a whopping $675 to the car’s price tag. Fog lamps, which were otherwise standard on the IROC-Z, were deleted to save weight and improve air flow to the engine’s cold air intake system.
