CHEVROLET CAMARO INTERIOR SKETCH IS FUTURISTIC FUN

If you are anything like us, there is something deeply satisfying about looking through automotive design sketches and renderings. They represent a form of ideation that oftentimes impacts the cars that we live with everyday, though certainly not always. General Motors Design department has a wonderful Instagram page where the post all sort of these sketches, be they old or new. Thanks to a recent post uploaded by GM Design, we now have a look at what the interior of the Chevrolet Camaro could look like in a future timeline. It’s definitely unlike any muscle car on the market today.

While there is nothing that obviously denotes this interior sketch from 2018 as one that belongs to the Chevrolet Camaro, the emblem on the yoke-style steering wheel is a hint. The interior design appears to be inspired by that of the C8 Corvette, as can be seen with the addition of the climate control waterfall. Furthermore, the screen to the right of the steering wheel is clearly lifted from the C8, as is the design for the gear selector. Things aren’t a direct carbon copy however, as is made evident by the center gauge cluster screen, as well as the new screen to the left of the wheel. The triple-monitor setup combined with the waterfall gives the interior a driver-focused appearance, which is always welcome in an enthusiast car.

Like any proper design sketch, there are quite a few unique touches to be found in this Chevrolet Camaro interior. Take the pop-out interior pop out door handles, as well as that awesome dashboard design. Combined with the Alcantara trim found throughout, you’re left with an upscale looking interior. Especially when you remember that this layout belongs inside a General Motors built muscle car.

The only real gripe that we would have if this interior was ever adopted in the Chevy Camaro is that yoke steering wheel. Despite what Elon says, this is not a good layout for a street car. In order to alleviate the need for going hand over hand, these wheels have to be combined with an extremely quick steering rack. That isn’t a problem for F1 racers, but it isn’t exactly something most drivers would be familiar with. Without an upgraded ratio, everyday tasks like parking or three point turns become incredibly difficult. While we know that this is simply a designer taking a bit of inspiration from airplanes, this is something we’d leave out. That said, we love the addition of the traditional Camaro badging. It just looks better than the old-school bow-tie.

Whether or not any of these ideas shown in the GM Design sketch make it to the production Chevrolet Camaro, it’s nice to see that GM hasn’t completely forgotten about their most famous muscle car. We wouldn’t get your hopes up to see this stuff happen in the real world. MC&T was the first to report that the Chevrolet Camaro’s future has been heavily altered, at which point makes it impossible for us to determine if design elements from this futuristic cockpit will see light of day.
