RK SPORT NEW CARBON TRUNK LID WITH SPOILER
Review by: SOPMOD & BillySpeed
I recently saw an advertisement for a new carbon trunk lid on a Camaro forum. The lid is manufactured by RK Sport and sold by Double D Mods.
Note: If you look close at edge of spoiler you can see the mold line I mention.

I contacted Dennis from Double D mods for more information on the lid. I ended up placing the order and within the next week the trunk was delivered to my local body shop. I have received the very first production lid.
Overall the hood is a very nice piece. We mounted the truck lid on the car for a test fit. The revels and fit are right on. The carbon trunk fits as well at the factory trunk lid. I have to point out the finish leaves much to be desired. Due to the two piece construction of the trunk the seam is dead center of the built in spoiler and leaves much to be desired. Being a carbon fiber finish product this should be finished and ready for install out of the box. This was not the case in this trunk lid I received. The mold line was hideous and very obvious once out of the box and on the car.
You can see the line across the edge of the spoiler
The gap was so bad in some places you could insert your finger nail in the joint.
My recommendation to RK is to finish the trunk lid before shipping to a customer. The repair involves applying resin to the joint, sanding, polishing, and the clearing the entire lid with a quality automotive clear. This will help hide the seam and prevent the resin from yellowing later. I think RK needs to reevaluate and invest in the cost of taking the time to finish the trunk lid. Even if it means they have to pass a price increase on the customer.
First coat of clear
I am very grateful to two of my friends who made this repair possible, Billy (Black Horse Pike Auto Body) and Jimmy (XTREME KREATIONS) Jimmy is capable of doing quality repairs to carbon fiber, fiberglass, and custom airbrushing. I ended up spending an additional $150.00 to have the repair and clear applied. Once Jimmy filled the joint with resin, sanded and polished he applied a very light coat of black via an air brush to blend the seam. Billy then sanded the entire trunk lid with 800 grit sand paper and applied two quality coats of automotive clear. The finish on the Trunk lid looks like glass and the seam is barely noticeable unless you really look for it.
Second application of clear coat.
I have been in contact with Dennis at Double D mods and he has notified RK Sport. I am sure RK Sport will come up with a solution to the seam issue. Overall this is a very nice Carbon Fiber trunk lid. The best we have seen so far, we had no issues with the fit.
RK Sport also offers a fiber glass version of this trunk.
