CamaroNews – KGP our Spy Photographers caught a less-disguised prototype for the all-new Camaro Z28, running on Michigan public roads without the audacious rear wing it wore during its Nurburgring tests.
It’s the second time we’ve spotted the Z28 testing on public roads (the first time involved prototypes heavily shrouded in vinyl camo), and both times the road-going test cars were completely wingless. Every other time we’ve spotted the Camaro Z28s involved testing on test tracks, or race tracks, and massive rear wings were in effect. The wing used during ‘Ring tests was clearly a bolt-on unit , with the mounting points clearly visible. This leads us to wonder if the standard production Z28 will be offered with the clean rear decks seen in the road tests, with optional, bolt on units specifically intended for track duty.
It’s worth noting that both the road-tested and track-tested Camaro Z28 prototypes have had the same frontal aerodynamic aids, made up of a large front splitter working in conjunction with aggressive canards affixed to the front bumper. It appears that these overt trackworthy enhancements will be a constant part of the future Camaro Z28 package.
The prototype takes elements of the ZL1, but goes a step farther for this track-focused machine. While there is no information yet leaked on what engine will be in play on the Z28, expect a number of weight-reduction measures.
The Camaro Z28 is expected to join the range next year, as a 2018 model.
